Hello, I'm Dr. Jinho Kim.
Unlike the face, the neck is hard to cover with makeup, so many people worry about neck lines. When looking into neck-line treatments, the point that confuses people most is the difference between 'regular Botox' and 'skin Botox'.
Both use the same botulinum toxin, but they differ greatly in purpose, injection layer and mechanism.
1. Different injection layers, different goals
Regular Botox (target: the muscle layer)
It suppresses the contraction of muscles that stand out when you make expressions or strain, such as the platysma in the neck.
Skin Botox (target: the dermis)
Small amounts are injected closely and evenly into the dermis and the shallow skin layers. The aim is change on the skin surface: finer lines, smoother texture and better elasticity.
2. Different results, different reviews
Regular Botox: effective for the vertical muscle bands (platysmal bands) that stand up when you tense your neck, and for the deep lines that form when the muscle works.
Skin Botox: suited to improving the skin texture you can feel with your fingertips and smoothing the fine horizontal lines that sit on the surface.
3. Finding the treatment you need
Neck lines usually appear as a mix of vertical muscle bands and deep lines caused by muscle movement, and fine horizontal lines and texture problems caused by the skin itself losing elasticity.
When you read reviews, rather than relying on "it got better", first decide whether your concern is closer to a muscle problem (regular Botox) or a skin-surface problem (skin Botox), and then look at cases that match. That gives you a far more accurate picture.
At your consultation, have your current condition assessed precisely and decide on a treatment that targets the right layer for your concern.
Thank you.
