Juvelook Eye, Juveàcell and Re2O: Why Do Lumps and the Tyndall Effect Occur Under the Eyes?

Hello, I'm Dr. Jinho Kim of Cheongdam Chaoreum Clinic.

Under-eye consultation

Clients who come in because the under-eye area looks hollow or the tear trough has deepened often bring up three names at once: Juvelook Eye, Juveàcell and Re2O.

All three are known as treatments that fill the under-eye area, but what they do once inside the skin differs, and the lumps and Tyndall effect people worry about arise by slightly different routes. Let me go through them in the order the questions usually come up in the consultation room.

1. What does each of the three do?

Juvelook Eye is a product that contains PDLLA particles together with hyaluronic acid. Rather than creating volume the moment it is injected, the particles stimulate the skin so that your own skin gradually produces collagen.

How Juvelook Eye works

Juveàcell and Re2O are based on human acellular dermal matrix (hADM): human dermis with the cellular components removed. They put the structural components that make up skin directly into thinned dermis, so the starting point is different.

Juveàcell and Re2O: human dermal matrix

Think of Juvelook Eye as a treatment that asks the skin to fill itself in, and Juveàcell and Re2O as treatments that supply the missing material directly.

2. Lumps and the Tyndall effect: are they the same side effect?

The two are often lumped together because both make the under-eye area look uneven, but their causes differ. A lump is product gathered in one place that you can feel as a bump under your fingertip; the Tyndall effect is product sitting close to the skin surface that shows through bluish when light hits it.

Lumps versus the Tyndall effect

Both are tied to how deep and how evenly the product was placed. In a study that injected the same material under the eyes at different depths and examined the results by MRI, the shallower injections showed clearly more show-through and uneven spread.

3. So which is less risky under the eyes?

This is the question I'm asked most in consultations, but it cannot be answered with a product name alone. Which one to consider first depends on what bothers you most about your under-eye area.

Assessing the under-eye area before choosing a product

Whichever product you choose, if the step of setting the depth to match the thickness of your under-eye skin and the shape of the hollow is skipped, the worry about side effects does not go away. That is also why I look at the condition of the under-eye area before the product name.

In closing

Some people start rubbing the area as soon as it feels lumpy after treatment, but I'd ask you to check the cause before massaging. I've written separately about nodules and massage in the post below.
